Algunos datos interesantes sobre nuestras finanzas personales: Las estadísticas muestran que de los empleados que llegan a jubilarse, la gran mayoría queda dependiendo económicamente del estado, o de alguna institución, o de algún familiar. Si trabajando recibes US$500 mensuales, qué podrás hacer con US$200 mensuales o menos? En mi caso, las deudas que han ido minando mi excelente salario, me llevaron a que no me alcanzara ni siquiera para pagar la renta.   /   Some interesting facts about our personal finances: Statistics show that the vast majority of employees who retire end up financially dependent on the state, an institution, or a family member. If you earn US$500 a month, what can you do with US$200 a month or less? In my case, the debts that have been eroding my excellent salary have left me unable to even pay my rent.

Por qué no alcanza la quincena? Si tienes malos hábitos o vicios como el alcohol o el juego, eso contribuye significativamente. Yo personalmente soy un soñador. Aún cuando la prudencia manda que no hagas ciertas cosas, yo me endeudaba para lograrlas (endeudarme era la única manera que conocía para conseguir los recursos necesarios). Los viajes a Paris y Barcelona los hice de mi propio bolsillo. La empresa más grande de Colombia no tenía presupuesto para sufragarlos.  /.  Why isn't a fortnight's paycheck enough? If you have bad habits or vices like alcohol or gambling, that contributes significantly. Personally, I'm a dreamer. Even when prudence dictates against doing certain things, I went into debt to achieve them (going into debt was the only way I knew to get the necessary resources). I paid for my trips to Paris and Barcelona out of my own pocket. The largest company in Colombia didn't have the budget to cover them.

Hay que construir los sueños. Lo anterior me lleva al siguiente motivo de este paso: Si queremos luchar por nuestros sueños, por los de nuestras familias, por los de nuestros seres amados, SIENDO EMPRENDEDORES LO PODREMOS LOGRAR. Ahora bien, no solamente hablo de sueños materiales, sino también espirituales y físicos. Quieres servir a tu prójimo? Quieres ayudar a muchas personas a conquistar sus sueños?  /   Dreams must be built. This brings me to the next reason for this step: If we want to fight for our dreams, for those of our families, for those of our loved ones, BEING ENTREPRENEURS WE CAN ACHIEVE THEM. Now, I'm not just talking about material dreams, but also spiritual and physical ones. Do you want to serve your neighbor? Do you want to help many people achieve their dreams?

Al hacer un balance de mi vida debo decir que trabajé durante 18 años en la empresa más grande del país. Hacer un balance de estos 18 años me lleva a plantearme varias cosas: Académica y laboralmente me dejan grandes dividendos, 3 especializaciones, un diplomado, un máster, un doctorado. Experiencia en la Automatización Industrial (que he podido compartir a través de la docencia universitaria). Me convertí en un experto en mi campo.  Pero también me deja un divorcio, y un hijo que necesita de mi tiempo. Lo que me lleva al siguiente motivador para dar este paso: Siendo Emprendedor puedes luchar por tu LIBERTAD FINANCIERA. La cual no es tener mucho dinero, sino tener tiempo para compartir con tu familia, con tus seres amados.  /Taking stock of my life, I must say that I worked for 18 years at the largest company in the country. Taking stock of these 18 years leads me to consider several things: Academically and professionally, they have left me great dividends, 3 specializations, a diploma, a master's degree, a doctorate. Experience in Industrial Automation (which I have been able to share through university teaching). I became an expert in my field. But it also left me with a divorce, and a son who needs my time. Which brings me to the next motivator to take this step: Being an Entrepreneur, you can fight for your FINANCIAL FREEDOM. Which is not having a lot of money, but having time to share with your family, with your loved ones.

Existen unas primeras motivaciones para hacer este cambio, son económicas. No me alcanzaba el salario. Muchos dirán que esto solamente le ocurre a las personas de bajos ingresos. Yo tenía un excelente salario, pero era pobre financieramente, porque la mayor parte de mi salario se iba en cubrir deudas. Vivía en la carrera de las ratas, como llama Robert Kiyosaki, el gurú de las finanzas, a la carrera en la que vivimos todo el tiempo: Trabajar para obtener dinero, Consumimos en exceso, Necesitamos más dinero, Tenemos que vender nuestro tiempo, y volvemos a iniciar el ciclo.   /   There were some initial motivations for making this change: economic. My salary wasn't enough. Many would say this only happens to low-income people. I had an excellent salary, but I was financially poor because most of it went to covering debt. I lived in the rat race, as Robert Kiyosaki, the financial guru, calls the race we live in all the time: Work to earn money, overconsume, need more money, have to sell our time, and then start the cycle all over again.

 

Muchos dirán que eso tan solo le pasa a las personas que no están educadas, yo tengo un doctorado. Muchos dirán que siendo buenos en lo que hacen estarán bien, modestia aparte me considero muy bueno en lo que hago, tanto así que en septiembre 2015 estuve en Paris, exponiendo los resultados de una investigación en 2 Congresos internacionales de FDD, y en septiembre 2016 estuve en Barcelona exponiendo mi investigación doctoral en otro congreso académico internacional.   /   Many will say that this only happens to uneducated people; I have a doctorate. Many will say that if you're good at what you do, you'll be fine. Modesty aside, I consider myself very good at what I do. So much so that in September 2015, I was in Paris, presenting the results of my research at two international FDD conferences, and in September 2016, I was in Barcelona presenting my doctoral research at another international academic conference.

 

Lo que ocurre es que el mundo está cambiando a pasos agigantados. Lo escribió Alvin Toffler en su libro La Tercera Ola hace más de 40 años. Hay que educarse financieramente, conocer conceptos como ingreso residual, apalancamiento, etc.   /   The fact is that the world is changing by leaps and bounds. Viaje a Barcelona (España): A inicios de septiembre del 2016 viajé a Barcelona (España) a realizar ponencia en el 3er Congreso de Control Tolerante a Fallos. Aproveché este viaje para hacer varias cosas: En Bogotá me reuní con directivos de posgrados en Data Analytics de una de las mayores universidades de Colombia, con quienes esperaba dictar clases en el tema de Marketing y Detección y Diagnóstico de Situaciones Anormales a partir del 2017. Ën Madrid tuve una reunión con una empresa española que estuvimos representando en Colombia y con unos grandes amigos Emprendedores de España. En Barcelona llegué al final de una presentación de música colombiana que tenía mi hijastra mayor. Me vi también en Barcelona con un gran amigo, para entregarle una encomienda de ropa para su bebé que estaba a punto de nacer. Durante este viaje tomé la decisión de renunciar a mi trabajo de tiempo completo en el centro de investigación científica donde laboré durante 18 años y a partir del 1 de enero del 2017  dedicarme a la docencia, a la investigación científica y AuroraTech. Aun no he generado ingresos económicos que reemplacen los de mi empresa anterior. Pero hay que dar pasos de fé.   /   Trip to Barcelona (Spain): In early September 2016, I traveled to Barcelona (Spain) to give a presentation at the 3rd Fault-Tolerant Control Conference. I took advantage of this trip to do several things: In Bogotá, I met with directors of postgraduate programs in Data Analytics from one of the largest universities in Colombia, with whom I expected to teach classes on Marketing and Detection and Diagnosis of Abnormal Situations starting in 2017. In Madrid, I had a meeting with a Spanish company we were representing in Colombia and with some great entrepreneurial friends from Spain. In Barcelona, ​​I attended a Colombian music presentation by my oldest stepdaughter. I also met up with a good friend in Barcelona to deliver a package of clothes for his soon-to-be-born baby.  During this journey, I made the decision to resign from my full-time job at the scientific research center where I had worked for 18 years and, starting January 1, 2017, dedicate myself to teaching, scientific research, and AuroraTech. I have not yet generated enough income to replace that of my previous company. But I have to take steps of faith.

En Exodo 14 si el pueblo de Israel no hubiera comenzado a caminar, tal vez el mar Rojo no se habría abierto. Al dialogar esta decisión con mi hijo quedó bastante preocupado. Yo también pero tengo fé. Necesito libertad financiera. Mi hijo está enfermo y requiere de mi tiempo y atenciones. Renunciando antes de tener los ingresos económicos que reemplacen a los de mi trabajo de tiempo completo, voy a probar una teoría: El Pareto a la hora de renunciar es la libertad de tiempo que obtienes y necesitas para generar con tu emprendimiento los ingresos residuales que te darán libertad financiera. Estoy descubriendo que el éxito en mi Emprendimiento es que emplee el conocimiento especializado y la pasión que ya tengo. A finales de septiembre del 2016 tuve la oportunidad de asistir en Bogotá a la conferencia anual de los negocios por internet en Latinoamérica.   /   In Exodus 14, if the people of Israel hadn't started walking, perhaps the Red Sea wouldn't have parted. When discussing this decision with my son, he was quite concerned. I was too, but I have faith. I need financial freedom. My son is sick and requires my time and attention. By quitting before having the income to replace my full-time job, I'm going to test a theory: The Pareto factor when quitting is the time freedom you gain and need to generate the residual income with your business that will give you financial freedom. I'm discovering that success in my business depends on using the specialized knowledge and passion I already have. A finales de mayo del 2016 nos mudamos mi hijo y yo a un apartamento solos. Mi mamá se mudó con otro hijo que vive en la misma ciudad. Ha sido duro para mí mamá y para mí tener que vivir por aparte, después de 2 años en que vivimos juntos y ella fue un gran apoyo emocional usada por Dios para levantarme luego de la separación y divorcio de mi Ex esposa. Mi hijo y yo pudimos compartir más tiempo juntos de hijo y padre. Romanos 8:28 lo bueno y también lo malo obra para bien.  /   At the end of May 2016, my son and I moved into an apartment alone together. My mom moved in with another son who lives in the same city. It has been hard for my mom and me to have to live apart, after 2 years of living together. She was a great emotional support, used by God to lift me up after the separation and divorce from my ex-wife. My son and I were able to share more time together as son and father. Romans 8:28 both good and evil work for good.

Debemos perdonar 70 veces 7 (Mateo 18:15-22). Me reuní con mi ex esposa. Sentí que el terrible sentimiento de odio que tenía se me quitaba. Dios está sanando mi corazón. Ella me propuso regresar juntos. Aunque siento que puede tener razón, no me sentía listo para dar este paso. Pude divorciarme definitivamente de mi esposa. Pero aún la amo. Podría argüir sus errores, o podría darle una segunda oportunidad. Salí con mi ex esposa e hijo. Sentí como el amor renació en mi. Pero seguían doliendo las heridas. Duele mucho recordar lo que nos hicimos mutuamente. Es muy difícil olvidar. Aunque he estado ejercitando la terapia del perdón. Debería doler menos si fuera consciente del dolor que yo también le causé. Pero no entendemos el dolor del otro así no más. Hay que ponerse en sus zapatos.  /   We must forgive 70 times 7 (Matthew 18:15-22). I reunited with my ex-wife. I felt the terrible feeling of hatred I had was gone. God is healing my heart. She proposed to get back together. Although I feel she may be right, I didn't feel ready to take this step. I could have divorced my wife permanently. But I still love her. I could argue her mistakes, or I could give her a second chance. I went out with my ex-wife and son. I felt like love was reborn in me. But the wounds still hurt. It hurts a lot to remember what we did to each other. It's very difficult to forget. Although I've been practicing forgiveness therapy, it should hurt less if I were aware of the pain I also caused her. But we don't understand each other's pain just like that. We have to put ourselves in their shoes.

En cuanto a mi recuperación física continué realizando esfuerzos ingentes por mejorar mi condición física. Inicie tomando un medicamento experimental que había arrojado resultados muy positivos en pacientes sobrevivientes de derrame cerebral. Para aumentar la plasticidad cerebral, es decir que funciones que antes desempeñaban zonas del cerebro que fueron dañadas por el derrame, sean ahora desempeñadas por otras zonas del cerebro que no fueron dañadas. A finales de febrero del año 2017 camino con dificultad usando bastón. Y en este momento he dejado de lado mi recuperación física por atender con más esmero a AuroraTech.   /   As for my physical recovery, I continued to make tremendous efforts to improve my physical condition. I began taking an experimental medication that had shown very positive results in stroke survivors. It was designed to increase brain plasticity, meaning that functions previously performed by areas of the brain damaged by the stroke were now performed by other areas of the brain that were not damaged. As of late February 2017, I was walking with difficulty using a cane. At this time, I have put my physical recovery on hold to focus more on AuroraTech.

En Colombia atravesamos durante esta época de una fuerte polémica por el acuerdo de paz entre el gobierno y las FARC. Comparto ahora la reflexión de la periodista Claudia Palacios: Como perdonar lo imperdonable? 1. No somos una Colombia sino muchas. Cuales son esas otras Colombias que no conocemos?   /   We are not one Colombia, but many. What are these other Colombias we don't know about?

2. Falta autocrítica. Los lideres se preocupan en cómo va a quedar su nombre en la historia.   /   There's a lack of self-criticism. Leaders worry about how their name will go down in history.

3. Debemos conocer la historia, no para justificarla sino para entenderla. Que nos falta para entender de lo injustificable?   /   We must know history, not to justify it, but to understand it. What are we missing to understand the unjustifiable?

4. Los medios de comunicación están chiveados con la paz. No se han reportado todas las noticias de paz, tan solo las noticias trágicas, pero no la resiliencia de las víctimas. Lo que pensamos del conflicto en Colombia es el resultado de los medios de comunicación ó por parte de nuestros propios sentidos? Debemos ser responsables en cómo construimos nuestra visión.   /   The media is screwed with peace. Not all the news about peace has been reported, only the tragic news, but not the resilience of the victims. Is what we think about the conflict in Colombia the result of the media or our own senses? We must be responsible in how we construct our vision.

5. Hay muchos desacuerdos y acuerdos sobre el perdón y la reconciliación. El perdón es una decisión personal. Requiere acompañamiento. El perdón es un regalo que se hace a sí misma la víctima. Cómo incorporamos las diferentes visiones del perdón en nuestro aporte para la paz?   /   There are many disagreements and agreements regarding forgiveness and reconciliation. Forgiveness is a personal decision. It requires support. Forgiveness is a gift the victim gives to themselves. How do we incorporate different visions of forgiveness into our contribution to peace?

6. No es suficiente con ser un buen ciudadano. Hay que ser excepcional. Construir paz desde el rol que cada uno tiene.   /   It's not enough to be a good citizen. You have to be exceptional. Building peace from the role each of us plays.

Debo decir que la infraestructura de comunicaciones de mi Universidad en Valencia (España) es la mejor que tenido oportunidad de experimentar. Aquellas tareas de procesamiento digital que me tomaban un par de horas en Colombia, en Valencia las podía realizar en unos pocos minutos. Los días anteriores a la defensa de mi tesis ante el tribunal, recuerdo que casi no pude dormir. La defensa resultó ser todo un éxito, y pude descansar un poco.  Mis directores nos invitaron junto con el tribunal una deliciosa comida. La tradición exige que sea el estudiante quien realice dicha invitación, pero yo agradecí dicho gesto ya que mi desplazamiento a Valencia lo había realizado con recursos propios, debido a la dura situación financiera que se encontraba pasando la empresa para la que trabajaba en ese momento.  /   I must say that the communications infrastructure at my university in Valencia, Spain, is the best I've ever experienced. Digital processing tasks that used to take me a couple of hours in Colombia could be completed in a few minutes in Valencia. I remember barely sleeping a few days before my thesis defense before the panel. The defense was a complete success, and I was able to get some rest. My supervisors invited me and the panel to a delicious meal. Tradition dictates that the student extend this invitation, but I appreciated the gesture since I had traveled to Valencia at my own expense, due to the difficult financial situation the company I was working for at the time was facing.

A mi regreso a Colombia recibí la bienvenida de mi hijo y mi mamá, quienes festejaron conmigo dicho paso. Incluso mi ex esposa me felicitó, ya que ella había sido testigo del gran milagro que significaba al haber concluido este doctorado luego de la ocurrencia el 28 de febrero del 2008 de mi derrame cerebral.  /   Upon my return to Colombia, I was welcomed by my son and my mother, who celebrated this milestone with me. Even my ex-wife congratulated me, as she had witnessed the miracle of completing this doctorate after my stroke on February 28, 2008.

Continué trabajando en las noches en mi Emprendimiento, AuroraTech, que para este momento se centraba solamente en las Pequeñas y Medianas Empresas PYMES, y en los Emprendedores, ofreciendo servicios de Marketing Digital y Video Marketing. Configuraba campañas en Facebook Ads, Twitter Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Google AdWords, y otros para Emprendedores del Medio Oriente y Africa (Nigeria, Sudáfrica, Marruecos, etc.). Esto me permitió llegar a esta audiencia tan lejana geográficamente, pero tan cercana a mi corazón.   /   I continued working nights on my startup, AuroraTech, which at the time focused solely on small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and entrepreneurs, offering digital marketing and video marketing services. I set up campaigns on Facebook Ads, Twitter Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Google AdWords, and other platforms for entrepreneurs in the Middle East and Africa (Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, etc.). This allowed me to reach this audience, so geographically distant but so close to my heart.

A mediados de abril del 2016 estuve en la ciudad de Cartagena, desarrollando un trabajo en Gerenciamiento de Alarmas, y tuve que poner a punto la plataforma informatica con la que los diferentes involucrados podríamos compartir información, y de manera colaborativa construir las decisiones que debíamos tomar con respecto a las alarmas de las plantas industriales. Todos estaban muy ocupados: Operaciones, Control, Proceso, pero hay tareas con respecto a las alarmas, que son inaplazables, y que tienen que ver con Seguridad de Proceso, el motor que me ha impulsado a continuar con este trabajo (vidas de las personas, impacto ambiental, y perdidas económicas).   /   In mid-April 2016, I was in Cartagena, working on Alarm Management, and I had to set up the IT platform that would allow the various stakeholders to share information and collaboratively develop the decisions we needed to make regarding alarms at industrial plants. Everyone was very busy: Operations, Control, and Process. However, there were tasks related to alarms that couldn't be postponed and that had to do with Process Safety, the driving force that has driven me to continue with this work (people's lives, environmental impact, and economic losses).

Por la misma fecha hice algo de lo que me siento especialmente orgulloso: Envié dinero a Pakistan y Ecuador, para ayudar luego de terremotos que sufrieron esas regiones del mundo. Solo que esto se convirtió después, en el caso de Pakistán, en un caso que me enseñó que es mejor enseñar a pescar, que regalar un pescado (Génesis 3:19). Las personas no quieren salir de su zona de Comfort. Por mas que se les brindan nuevas oportunidades de salir de su precaria situación, les cuesta mucho entender en que consiste el Emprendimiento. Procastrinan. Dilatan sus decisiones. Asignan la culpa de su situación, o de no conquistar sus sueños, a los demás, pero no asumen la responsabilidad de construir algo mejor para sus vidas.   /   Around the same time, I did something I'm especially proud of: I sent money to Pakistan and Ecuador to help after the earthquakes those regions suffered. However, this later became, in the case of Pakistan, a case that taught me that it's better to teach someone how to fish than to give them a fish (Genesis 3:19). People don't want to leave their comfort zone. Even when they're offered new opportunities to escape their precarious situation, they have a hard time understanding what entrepreneurship is all about. They procrastinate. They delay their decisions. They blame others for their situation, or for not achieving their dreams, but they don't take responsibility for building something better for their lives.
